So, what is a business plan and why does a new business need one? A business plan is basically an outline of what a business is, what it does and how it intends to be and remain solvent. A plan is vital not only for obtaining funding from outside sources, but also for helping the business define itself and ensure its actions fit the mission.

* Makes it easier to gain advice from others. If a similar business that’s successful is willing to share knowledge, a plan makes it easier for them to do so. By understanding who you are, what you intend to do, what you have to work with and where you hope to be in the future, the other professional can give solid insight on potential pitfalls. Without the plan, the task of discerning your course might be tough.
These things should be included in a business plan:
* Company mission. Make it clear who you are and what you hope to do. This will help guide you through start up and beyond. The mission and goals can be added to and altered as parts of them have been achieved, but always make sure the current goals are understood by everyone who works in the business.
* Finances. You need to define what you bring to the table at start up or at any given time. What assets are being brought into the business and what are the prospects for future earnings. Make these realistic, especially in the long-term goals.

When creating a business plan, be realistic and conservative. Make sure the plan is easy to read and understand and be certain to use conservative estimates on such things as timelines, sales and profits. A business plan is a roadmap for a company to follow at any given point in its existence. For start-ups, however, it’s especially important the plan be solid, workable and easy to understand to help the company gain investors or starting funding.
